She joined the fast carrier task forces that would become the primary instrument of American Pacific power, the Essex-class carriers and their screens of cruisers and destroyers that could project airpower anywhere in the Pacific.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eShe participated in the Gilberts campaign, the Marshalls, and the opening strikes against the Marianas, the chain of engagements that brought American power steadily closer to the Japanese home islands. At the \u003cstrong\u003eBattle of the Philippine Sea\u003c\/strong\u003e in June 1944, she was part of the massive fleet engagement that destroyed Japanese carrier aviation and opened the door to the Marianas landings.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThrough the Philippines campaign and Leyte Gulf in late 1944, Biloxi contributed to the naval operations that finally broke Japan's ability to contest American naval dominance. In 1945 she participated in carrier strikes against the Japanese home islands, operations that brought destruction to Japanese naval facilities and industrial capacity as the final campaign to end the war intensified.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eNine battle stars for a ship that represented the professional, sustained naval power that won the Pacific War in its final phase. Biloxi was decommissioned on 28 August 1947.
