Silent Service Torpedo Kill | Mk-48 ADCAP | Operation Epic Fury
Quiet death.
In the early hours of March 3, 2026, somewhere in the Indian Ocean south of Sri Lanka, a U.S. Navy fast-attack submarine (SSN) hunted an Iranian warship in complete silence. One shot. One Mk-48 ADCAP heavyweight torpedo. The Iranian IRIS Dena (Moudge-class frigate) never saw it coming.
Minutes later the frigate was gone.
The strike, now known as part of Operation Epic Fury, became the first submarine torpedo kill by the United States since World War II, ending an 80-year record held by USS Torsk (SS-423) in 1945. For the Silent Service, it was a reminder to the world that nuclear-powered submarines still dominate the oceans.
No warning. No radio chatter. Just steel, water pressure, and a 650-pound Mk-48 warhead ripping a warship apart beneath the surface.
The Pentagon called it exactly what it was:
“Quiet death.”
The Silent Service Made History
The U.S. Navy submarine force has always operated where nobody sees it. Virginia-class and Los Angeles-class fast-attack submarines patrol the world’s oceans every day - invisible, lethal, and waiting.
During Operation Epic Fury, American naval power dismantled Iran’s fleet. Warships destroyed. Naval headquarters flattened. Even Iran’s Kilo-class submarine at Bandar Abbas was wiped out in the strikes.
But the moment naval historians will remember is the torpedo that ended the IRIS Dena in the Indian Ocean.
The first U.S. submarine torpedo kill since WWII.
A record broken by the Silent Service.
