"Second to None": The Story of the U.S. Army 2nd Infantry Division

Introduction:

The 2nd Infantry Division, also known as the "Indianhead Division," is one of the most storied units in the history of the United States Army. Since its creation in 1917, the division has served in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Gulf War, and the Iraq War. Throughout its long and distinguished history, the 2nd Infantry Division has remained committed to its motto of "Second to None."

World War I

The origin of the "Second to None" motto can be traced back to World War I. During the war, the 2nd Infantry Division was part of the American Expeditionary Forces, which fought alongside the Allied Powers on the Western Front. The division's commander, Major General Omar Bundy, wanted a motto that would reflect the high standards and fighting spirit of his soldiers. He chose "Second to None" as the division's motto, and it has remained in use ever since.

In WWI, the 2nd ID proved its mettle in some of the most significant engagements. During the Battle of Château-Thierry in June 1918, the division was deployed to halt the last major German offensive of the war. The Division's soldiers faced fierce combat, but they stood their ground, repelling the German forces and playing a significant role in halting their advance towards Paris.

Their bravery was again on display at the Battle of Belleau Wood, where the Division fought alongside U.S. Marines. This hard-fought victory marked a turning point in the war, blunting German momentum and signaling that American forces would be a significant factor in the conflict.

In the Battle of Blanc Mont Ridge in October 1918, the Division undertook a critical offensive. They successfully captured the German-held ridge, breaking the German lines and forcing a German retreat. This success played a major role in the eventual signing of the Armistice a month later.

World War II

During WWII, the Division further cemented its reputation. Landing on Omaha Beach on D-Day, they faced intense German fire. Despite suffering significant casualties, the Division persevered and played a vital role in securing the beachhead, a key initial step in the liberation of Europe.

In the Battle of the Bulge, the Division was critical in resisting the last major German offensive on the Western Front. Despite facing extreme winter conditions and a determined enemy, they held their positions, repelling the German forces and protecting vital supply routes.

Korean War

The Division's role in the Korean War stands out among its many accomplishments. During the Battle of Pusan Perimeter, they played a significant part in the first major conflict of the war. The Division successfully held a defensive line in the southeast corner of Korea against a larger North Korean force, preventing a complete takeover of the peninsula.

Their resilience was evident again in the Battle of Heartbreak Ridge. Over the course of a month, the Division fought fiercely to take control of this strategic hill. Facing a well-entrenched and determined enemy, the Division's soldiers proved their motto once more, capturing the hill and holding it against repeated counterattacks.

War on Terror

In more recent conflicts, the Division's commitment and valor continue to shine. During Operation Iraqi Freedom, they played a significant role in the 2003 invasion of Iraq, leading the assault on Baghdad and helping to topple the regime of Saddam Hussein.

In Afghanistan, during Operation Enduring Freedom, the Division has conducted a range of counterinsurgency and stability operations. They've faced intense urban and guerrilla warfare, but their tenacity and skill have consistently shone through, contributing to the broader mission of establishing stability in the region.

Throughout these conflicts, the U.S. Army 2nd Infantry Division has exemplified their motto 'Second to None.' Their brave actions have influenced the outcomes of these wars, showcasing their steadfast courage, commitment, and proficiency.
