SCALABLE DESIGN
The Expeditionary Medical Support system is the Air Force's deployable hospital. EMEDS packages scale from a small team providing basic care to a 25-bed facility with surgical capability. EMEDS teams deploy with Air Expeditionary Wings to provide Role 2 medical care at forward operating locations. During OIF and OEF, EMEDS facilities at austere bases provided trauma surgery, critical care, and patient stabilization for evacuation. They bridge the gap between point of injury and theater hospitals.

WORLDWIDE
The Air Force Nurse Corps traces its heritage to the Army Air Forces flight nurses of WWII who pioneered aeromedical evacuation. Today, AF nurses serve in medical treatment facilities worldwide and deploy with EMEDS and CCATT teams. Critical care nurses are essential to the aeromedical evacuation mission, managing ventilated patients at altitude. The Nurse Corps provides the clinical backbone of Air Force healthcare at home station and forward deployed.
