The battalion's primary weapon system is the M777A2 155mm lightweight howitzer. 1/10 provides direct fire support for the 2nd Marine Division and has deployed its batteries as provisional rifle companies when the mission required it. The regiment traces its origin to 25 April 1914, when 10th Marines was first formed at Quantico as an artillery battalion under the 1st Marine Brigade.

In January 1942, 1/10 deployed to American Samoa and was detached from the 2nd Marine Division. The battalion later rejoined the division and provided fire support across the Pacific campaign at Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan, Tinian, and Okinawa. After the war, the battalion deployed to Japan as part of the occupation force.
