Unit Lineage
Activated on 11 April 1941 as the 4th Battalion, 10th Marines, the 2nd Battalion, 10th Marines is an artillery battalion assigned to the 10th Marine Regiment under the 2nd Marine Division at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Known as the "Pathfinders," 2/10 operates both the M777A2 155mm howitzer and the M142 HIMARS rocket launcher, giving the battalion cannon and rocket artillery capability. Under Force Design 2030, the division's HIMARS capability was consolidated within 2/10.
World War II
Originally designated 4/10, the battalion deployed with the 6th Marine Regiment to Iceland from spring 1941 to spring 1942 before moving to the Pacific theater in December 1942. The battalion was redesignated as 2/10 on 20 July 1945. During the war, the Pathfinders provided fire support at Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan, Tinian, and Okinawa. After the Japanese surrender, 2/10 relocated to Camp Lejeune in July 1946.
Cold War Through the Global War on Terror
2/10 participated in the Lebanon operation in 1958 and the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. Elements of the battalion served with the multinational peacekeeping force in Lebanon from 1982 to 1984 and participated in the invasion of Grenada in October 1983. The battalion deployed to Saudi Arabia for Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Batteries from 2/10 have deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan in support of OIF and OEF, including a deployment to Helmand Province from October 2009 to May 2010 where the battalion controlled all artillery survey, meteorological, and HIMARS assets in theater.
