2nd Battalion, 7th Marines

"Havoc"

Unit Lineage

Activated on 1 January 1941 at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines is a light infantry battalion assigned to the 7th Marine Regiment under the 1st Marine Division. 2/7 is currently based at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, California. The battalion's current rifle companies are Easy, Fox, and Gunfighters, with Weapons Company carrying the callsign "Wildcard." From the jungles of the Pacific to the cities of Al Anbar Province, 2/7 has been in the fight for over eight decades.

World War II

On 18 September 1942, 2/7 landed on Guadalcanal and fought for four months before being relieved by the Army's Americal Division. After rest and refit in Australia, the battalion landed at Cape Gloucester, New Britain on 26 December 1943 under Lieutenant Colonel Odell M. Conoley. That night, Japanese Marines launched a full counterattack. 2/7 absorbed the assault and by sunrise the entire enemy force had been destroyed. At Peleliu in September 1944, 2/7 was initially held in division reserve. When Chesty Puller's 1st Marines took devastating casualties fighting into the Umurbrogal Pocket, 2/7 was thrown directly into the middle of the 1st Marines' sector under intense artillery and mortar fire. The battalion fought on the island for another eight weeks. On 1 April 1945, 2/7 landed on Okinawa as part of the 80,000-Marine force and saw increasing resistance as they pushed south.

Korea

Reactivated on 17 August 1950 at Camp Pendleton, 2/7 deployed to Korea and fought through the Inchon-Seoul campaign, the Chosin Reservoir, and along the East Central and Western Fronts. At Chosin, Fox Company held Fox Hill under relentless Chinese assault. The mission to relieve Fox Company directly led to Lieutenant Colonel Raymond Davis of 1/7 receiving the Medal of Honor. On 27 March 1953, Hospital Corpsman Third Class William R. Charette was serving with Fox Company, 2/7 when he earned the Medal of Honor for repeatedly exposing himself to enemy fire to treat and shield wounded Marines near the Jamestown Line.

Vietnam

2/7 deployed to Vietnam in July 1965 and operated in the southern half of I Corps for five years. The battalion saw action across Qui Nhon, Chu Lai, Da Nang, Dai Loc, and An Hoa. 2/7 was a key participant in Operation Harvest Moon in December 1965 and Operation Utah in March 1966. Both were significant engagements against Viet Cong and NVA forces in Quang Nam and Quang Tin Provinces. The battalion departed Vietnam in October 1970.

Desert Shield / Desert Storm

After relocating to Twentynine Palms in January 1990, 2/7 deployed to Saudi Arabia in August 1990 for Operation Desert Shield. The battalion participated in the ground offensive during Desert Storm and returned to Twentynine Palms in March 1991.

Iraq

2/7 deployed to Iraq in February 2004 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. During its first OIF tour, the battalion lost eight Marines. In a subsequent deployment operating around the Fallujah area from July 2005 through January 2006, 2/7 was attached to Regimental Combat Team 6. On 1 December 2005, an IED detonated inside an abandoned flour factory being used as a patrol base outside Fallujah, killing ten Marines from the battalion in a single blast. It was the highest single-day U.S. casualty event in Iraq in months. The battalion returned to Fallujah from January through August 2007 for another combat tour.

Afghanistan

From April through November 2008, 2/7 deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Operating in northern Helmand and eastern Farah Provinces, the battalion engaged in heavy fighting with insurgent forces while building up the Afghan National Police. Twenty Marines and sailors attached to 2/7 gave their lives during that deployment.
