Unit Lineage

Originally activated on 14 June 1943 at Pahautanui, New Zealand as the 5th Battalion, 10th Marines, the battalion that became the 3rd Battalion, 10th Marines served with the 10th Marine Regiment - 2nd Marine Division across the Pacific and through multiple conflicts before being deactivated at Camp Lejeune on 26 April 2013. Based at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, 3/10 provided direct fire support for the 2nd Marine Division using the M777A2 howitzer and the M252 Expeditionary Fire Support System. Its batteries also served as provisional rifle companies and civil-military operations units when the mission demanded it.

World War II

The battalion provided artillery support across the Pacific campaign, including at Tarawa, Saipan, Tinian, and Okinawa. After the war, the battalion relocated to Camp Lejeune before being deactivated in November 1947.

Cold War Through the Global War on Terror

Reactivated in October 1949, 3/10 participated in the Lebanon operation in 1958 and the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. Elements served with the multinational peacekeeping force in Lebanon from 1982 to 1984. Parts of the battalion participated in the invasion of Grenada in October 1983. Batteries deployed for Desert Shield and Desert Storm and for Operation Provide Comfort in northern Iraq. Kilo Battery served as the artillery attachment for the 26th MEU from September 2001 to April 2002, participating in Operation Enduring Freedom in Pakistan and Afghanistan and providing security at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul. Batteries continued deploying to Iraq and Afghanistan through subsequent years. From October 2009 to May 2010, the battalion headquarters with India and Kilo Batteries deployed to Helmand Province, Afghanistan in support of combat operations.
