3rd Battalion, 6th Marines

"Teufelhunden"

Unit Lineage

Activated on 14 August 1917 at Quantico, Virginia, the 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines is an infantry battalion assigned to the 6th Marine Regiment under the 2nd Marine Division at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Known as "Teufelhunden," the German word for Devil Dogs, 3/6 carries the nickname that was born from the fighting its parent regiment did at Belleau Wood in 1918. The battalion deployed to France within months of activation and has been stood up and stood down multiple times across its history. As part of the 6th Marines, every Marine in the battalion wears the French Fourragere.

World War I

3/6 deployed to France in late 1917 and fought across the Western Front at Belleau Wood, St. Mihiel, and the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. At Belleau Wood on 6 June 1918, Major Berton W. Sibley's 3/6 swept into the southern end of the wood alongside 3/5 and immediately encountered heavy machine gun fire, snipers, and barbed wire. Marines and German infantry fought hand to hand. The casualties sustained that day were the highest in Marine Corps history up to that point. First Sergeant Dan Daly, already a two-time Medal of Honor recipient, led his Marines forward with the words that would become one of the most repeated lines in Corps history. After the armistice, 3/6 participated in the occupation of the Rhineland.

World War II

Reactivated in November 1940, 3/6 deployed to Iceland in 1941 before rejoining the 2nd Marine Division. The battalion fought at Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan, Tinian, and Okinawa. At Tarawa, 3/6 landed across Green Beach and was ordered to drive the length of Betio Island. At Saipan, the regiment faced the largest Japanese banzai attack of the war. After the surrender, 3/6 deployed to Nagasaki for the occupation of Japan.

Desert Storm

In 1991, the 6th Marines conducted the northernmost breach of the Iraqi defensive lines known as the Saddam Line on 24 February. The regiment advanced to a key objective called the Ice Tray and repulsed an Iraqi mechanized counterattack in an early-morning engagement known as the "Reveille Counterattack." The cease-fire found the 6th Marines blocking a major exit from Kuwait City at the base of Mutla Ridge.

Global War on Terror

In October 2005, 3/6 conducted Operation Ironfist, sweeping and clearing the cities of Sadah and Eastern Karabilah. The battalion then served as the main effort under Regimental Combat Team 2 during Operation Steel Curtain alongside 2/1, clearing Husaybah and Karabilah along the Syrian border. In January 2007, 3/6 deployed to Al Anbar Province at Camp Habbaniyah, operating from western Ramadi to the Fallujah area. The battalion returned to Iraq in April 2008, operating near Fallujah under Regimental Combat Team 1. In January 2010, 3/6 deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
