Originating at Camp Elliott, San Diego in 1942, the 3d Marine Division drew its initial ranks primarily from the 9th Marines. They marked their valor in World War II, navigating the challenges of Bougainville, Guam, and Iwo Jima. Post-war, the Division shifted to Japan and later Okinawa, preparing as an expeditionary force-in-readiness.
1965 marked a pivotal moment for the 3rd Marine Division with the establishment of a Marine compound at Da Nang Air Base, Vietnam. Operations expanded to Phu Bai, Quang Tri, and Dong Ha. Post-Vietnam, the Division found its base at Camp Courtney, Okinawa.
The 3rd Marine Division's valor continued in the 21st century, contributing to Operation Iraqi Freedom (2004-2011) and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan (2004-2014).
