7th Marine Regiment

"Magnificent Seventh"

Unit Lineage

The 7th Marine Regiment was formed on 14 August 1917 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and immediately deployed to Cuba. Known as "The Magnificent Seventh," the regiment is based at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, California, and falls under the 1st Marine Division and the I Marine Expeditionary Force. The 7th Marines is where Chesty Puller built his legend as a battalion commander on Guadalcanal. The regiment's current subordinate battalions are 1/7, 2/7, and 3/7.

World War II

Reactivated on 1 January 1941 at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the 7th Marines landed on Guadalcanal on 18 September 1942. For four months the regiment attacked Japanese defenders and repulsed banzai charges in some of the most relentless infantry combat of the Pacific campaign. Lieutenant Colonel Chesty Puller commanded 1/7 during the battle. Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone earned the Medal of Honor with the regiment during the defense of Henderson Field. The 7th Marines went on to fight at Cape Gloucester, Peleliu, and Okinawa before deploying to North China for occupation duty.

Korea

The 7th Marines spearheaded the 1st Marine Division's advance north to the Chosin Reservoir. Before reaching the reservoir, the regiment fought its first major engagement with Chinese forces near Sudong on 2 November 1950 despite its left flank being exposed for nearly 60 miles with no adjacent U.S. forces. At the Chosin, the 7th Marines held Hagaru-ri and fought along the main supply route during the breakout. The regiment produced multiple Medal of Honor recipients during the Korean War, including Lieutenant Colonel Raymond G. Davis of 1/7.

Vietnam

The 7th Marines deployed to Vietnam and participated in operations including Starlite, Piranha, Harvest Moon, Oklahoma Hills, and Mameluke Thrust, among many others. The regiment's battalions operated across I Corps and produced numerous Medal of Honor recipients during the war. The last elements of the 7th Marines departed South Vietnam on 13 October 1970.

Desert Storm Through the Global War on Terror

In August 1990, the 7th Marines relocated to Twentynine Palms and deployed to Saudi Arabia. During Desert Storm, battalions of the regiment served as lead elements along the Saudi-Kuwaiti border. In January 2003, the 7th Marines deployed to Kuwait as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. On 21 March, the regiment crossed into Iraq and led the 1st Marine Division in the deepest attack in Marine Corps history on the march to Baghdad. The regiment returned to Iraq in 2004 and 2006 for operations across Al Anbar Province. From 2009 forward, the 7th Marines deployed to Helmand Province, Afghanistan and its battalions operated in Sangin, Marjah, Musa Qaleh, and other contested districts. In 2014, 1/7 was the final Marine Corps unit to retrograde from Sangin, closing the Marines' chapter in one of the most fought-over districts of the war.
