Brooke-class Frigates
The Brooke-class frigates stand as a notable chapter in U.S. Navy history, evolving from the foundational design of the Garcia class but integrating the advanced Tartar Guided Missile System. Initiated into service in 1966, these frigates, spanning a total of six units, diligently served until their last decommissioning in 1989. While closely resembling the Garcia class in many aspects, the Brooke-class distinguished itself by replacing the secondary 5-inch/38 caliber gun with the advanced Tartar missile system, complemented by enhanced electronics.
Additionally, these ships boasted the sophisticated AN/SPS-52 3D air search radar, as opposed to the Garcia's two-dimensional AN/SPS-40, and incorporated the AN/SPG-51 for precision target tracking and missile guidance. Central to their design, the Mk 22 single-arm missile launcher was strategically positioned amidships, housing a magazine capable of holding 16 missiles.
