Helicopter Mine Countermeasures Squadron 15 (HM-15)

Helicopter Mine Countermeasures Squadron 15 (HM-15)

Helicopter Mine Countermeasures Squadron 15 (HM-15) is a United States Navy helicopter squadron founded in 1987, nicknamed the "Blackhawks," and based at Naval Station Norfolk. Flying the MH-53E Sea Dragon and staffed by both active duty and reserve personnel, it's the sister squadron to HM-14, the "Vanguard."

HM-15 was initially stationed at NS Norfolk but moved to NAS Alameda in October 1987. The squadron played a significant humanitarian role, providing support after the Loma Prieta earthquake in California in 1989. In 1991, the squadron deployed to the Persian Gulf for Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, remaining until April 1992. HM-15 and reserve squadron HM-19 became the Navy's first fully integrated active and reserve squadrons in 1994. In 1996, the squadron moved to NAS Corpus Christi, then to NS Norfolk in 2010.

The squadron's duties have been wide-ranging, from supporting more than 750 personnel in various work centers to deploying across the globe. Their operations include locations like Bahrain, South Korea, Indonesia, the Middle East, and both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The squadron was part of Hurricane Katrina relief efforts and has operated from various Navy ships' flight decks.

Awarded the Chief of Naval Operations Safety Award and a Meritorious Unit Commendation in 1995, HM-15 has been recognized for its commitment to excellence. The squadron's operations include patrolling foreign and domestic waters to locate and destroy sea-based mines, and its heavy-lift aircraft capabilities have allowed it to undertake assault support and cargo transport missions.

In July 2012, a tragic helicopter crash in Bahrain led to the reassignment of key personnel, marking a somber note in the squadron's otherwise illustrious history. HM-15's global deployments for operational, training, humanitarian, and foreign relations tasks illustrate the squadron's vital role within the U.S. Navy's mission.

HM-15's exceptional contributions to naval operations and humanitarian efforts are celebrated through a variety of merchandise available on Tactically Acquired.
