Armor

From the M4 Shermans that broke out at Normandy to the M1 Abrams that destroyed the Republican Guard at 73 Easting, American armor has been the decisive weapon on every battlefield it has entered. The tank is speed, shock, and firepower combined into 70 tons of steel. Armored divisions carry the battle streamers. Cavalry regiments carry the lineage. Tankers carry the fight.

ARMORED DIVISION
The first armored division in United States Army history. Old Ironsides learned the hardest lesson of the war at Kasserine Pass — where Rommel's Afrika Korps shattered green American armor in February 1943. The division rebuilt, fought back across North Africa, then slugged through Italy at Anzio and up the Po Valley. Kasserine made them bleed. Everything after made them lethal. Read more

George S. Patton's first armored command. He built the 2nd Armored Division from scratch, trained them at Fort Benning, and forged the doctrine that American armor would fight with. Hell on Wheels landed in North Africa, broke out at Normandy, crushed the Panzer Lehr Division at Saint-Lô, and drove to the Elbe River. The division Patton built fought the way Patton taught them — fast, violent, and without mercy. Read more

The heaviest armored division in the European Theater — Spearhead carried more tanks than any other division in the Army. They were first through the Siegfried Line, first into Cologne, and fought the famous tank duel at the Cologne Cathedral — an M26 Pershing against a Panther, filmed by combat cameramen. The 3rd Armored took more casualties than any other armored division in the ETO. They earned every mile. Read more

"BEST DIVISION"
Patton called them his best division. LTC Creighton Abrams — the future Army Chief of Staff and namesake of the M1 tank — commanded the 37th Tank Battalion that spearheaded the relief of Bastogne on December 26, 1944. The 4th Armored broke through the German encirclement and linked up with the 101st Airborne. Patton said of Abrams: "I'm supposed to be the best tank commander in the Army, but I have one peer — Abe Abrams." Read more

BOUGHT FOR THE ARMY
When the Germans launched the Ardennes Offensive in December 1944, the 7th Armored Division was thrown into St. Vith — a critical road junction the Germans needed. For six days, outnumbered and surrounded, the Lucky Seventh held. Their defense at St. Vith bought the time that allowed the rest of the Army to stabilize the Bulge. They were ordered to withdraw only when their position became untenable. By then, the damage was done — to the Germans. Read more

UNIT TRAINS AGAINST
The Blackhorse Regiment fought in Vietnam with a ferocity that earned them a reputation as one of the most effective units in the war — running thunder runs through enemy territory in M551 Sheridans and ACAVs. Since 1994, the 11th ACR has served as the opposing force at the National Training Center at Fort Irwin — playing the enemy so well that they beat almost every unit that rotates through. Every brigade that deploys to combat trains against Blackhorse first. Read more
