Special Boat Team 22 (SBT-22)

Special Boat Team 22 (SBT-22)

In October 2002, due to the NSW-21 force adjustments, Special Boat Team-22 came into existence. Situated at the John C. Stennis Space Center in Mississippi, SBT-22 utilizes the SOCR, CAC, and PBL combatant vessels, frequently deploying its SBDs to regions like Central America, South America, and the Middle East. Given that SBT-22 remains the sole NSW Riverine Unit, it possesses the capability to operate in any riverine setting globally.

The lineage of Special Boat Team 22 can be traced back to 1972 when it operated as Coastal River Division-22 in New Orleans, Louisiana. It transitioned to Special Boat Unit-22 in 1979. With a deep-seated tradition in Riverine warfare, the Team has notably been engaged in Counter-Narcotic Operations in Central and South America. Having played an instrumental role in Operation IRAQI FREEDOM in 2003, SBT-22 continues to be a pivotal force in the ongoing Global War on Terrorism.

One of the primary tasks of Special Boat Team 22 is piloting Special Operations Craft. These crafts, including Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats, are the heartbeat of naval incursions in varied terrains. Their agile and high-speed capabilities make them indispensable in amphibious operations, especially in regions like Central America, South America, and the Middle East.

The Special Boat Team also specializes in Counterterrorism Operations. In the turbulent waters of the Middle East and beyond, they've been instrumental in carrying out sensitive operations, oftentimes alongside the SEAL Team. The global war on terror has further emphasized their pivotal role in global security, ensuring safe waterways and strategic dominance.

Candidates aiming to join the Special Boat Team 22 undergo rigorous training. Upon successful completion, they're awarded the coveted SWCC Warfare Insignia. Their training grooms them for a diverse set of roles including Special Warfare Boat Operations and ensures they are ready for any challenge, anywhere.

The Naval Special Warfare Group oversees the training and operational deployments of SBT-22. With a vision rooted in excellence, they ensure that the team remains at the peak of its prowess.

While primarily a combat unit, the Special Warfare Boat operators also engages in training missions at the Naval Special Warfare Center, fostering ties with allied nations, and helping in honing their naval capabilities. Their presence in regions like the Southern Command has been crucial in enhancing inter-naval ties and ensuring maritime security.

Over the years, Special Boat Team 22 has grown beyond just a Boat Support Unit. They've carved a niche for themselves in the broader Naval Special Warfare community, contributing to missions far and wide. From the tumultuous waters of the Middle East to the strategic corridors of North East Asia, they've showcased valor, skill, and an unwavering commitment to the cause.

Today, the Special Boat Team 22 stands as a testament to the synergy between technology, training, and human spirit. As part of the NSWG, they continue to shape maritime strategies and remain at the forefront of naval excellence.
