USS Amsterdam (CL-101)

USS Amsterdam (CL-101): New York's Pacific Cruiser

Commissioned on 8 January 1945, USS Amsterdam was a Cleveland-class light cruiser that arrived in the Pacific in the war's final year. Named for the New York State city on the Mohawk River, she earned one battle star for operations in the Pacific through the Japanese surrender in August 1945.

Amsterdam entered service just as American naval forces were conducting carrier strikes against the Japanese home islands themselves, operations that brought the war directly to Japanese territory and demonstrated that no part of Japan was beyond the reach of American naval aviation. She participated in the carrier task force operations that characterized the war's final phase, screening Essex-class carriers and contributing to the sustained campaign to break Japan's will and capacity to continue fighting.

The kamikaze threat remained active through the summer of 1945, and cruisers like Amsterdam provided anti-aircraft defense that was essential to keeping the fast carriers operational. The war's end came with the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and Japan's surrender announcement on 15 August 1945, ending the need for the massive invasion that had been planned for November 1945.

Amsterdam was decommissioned on 30 June 1947. One battle star for service during the war's most consequential final months. Tactically Acquired's USS Amsterdam (CL-101) collection honors New York's contribution to the Pacific campaign and the crew who served aboard her.
