Among the Argonaut (V-4) Submarine Minelayer submarines that fought in the Pacific, USS Argonaut (SS-166) stands out for the quality and impact of her war record. The original USS Argonaut (V-4) was the largest submarine in the U.S. Navy when built and was designed as a submarine minelayer. She participated in the Makin Island raid with Nautilus in August 1942. She was lost on January 10, 1943, depth charged by Japanese destroyers off New Britain. All 105 crew perished, the largest crew lost on a U.S. submarine in WWII.
We built the USS Argonaut collection for submariners and their families. Every piece reflects the operational excellence and crew dedication that defined this boat's service.
