USS Bagley (DD-386)

USS Bagley (DD-386) was a Bagley-class destroyer of the United States Navy. The Bagley class was part of the 1,500-ton destroyer series built in the late 1930s, carrying an exceptionally heavy torpedo armament of sixteen tubes in four quadruple mounts. All eight ships of the class were stationed at Pearl Harbor as Destroyer Squadron 4 on 7 December 1941. Three were lost in combat during the Guadalcanal campaign. Two survivors were used as targets during the Operation Crossroads atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll in 1946.

Named for Ensign Worth Bagley, the only U.S. naval officer killed in action during the Spanish-American War, struck down aboard USS Winslow off Cardenas, Cuba, in 1898, USS Bagley was built by Norfolk Navy Yard, Portsmouth, Virginia and commissioned in June 1937. Lead ship of the Bagley class. At Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941, her crew was among the first to open fire on attacking Japanese aircraft, downing at least three torpedo planes. Participated in the Battle of Savo Island, where she rescued 400 survivors from the sinking cruiser USS Astoria. Later accepted the surrender of Japanese forces on Marcus Island at the end of the war.

USS Bagley earned 11 battle stars for service in: Pearl Harbor, Savo Island, Guadalcanal, New Guinea, Saipan, Philippine Sea, Leyte Gulf, Lingayen Gulf, Okinawa. Decommissioned June 1946. Sold for scrap September 1947.
