USS Barb (SSN-596) holds a distinguished place in American submarine history. The nuclear Barb carried one of the most distinguished names in submarine history. Her WWII predecessor (SS-220) earned the Medal of Honor for CDR Eugene Fluckey's legendary Pacific war patrols. The nuclear Barb served as a Permit-class attack submarine during the Cold War.
