USS Biloxi (CL-80)
USS Biloxi (CL-80): Gulf Coast at War in the Pacific
Commissioned on 31 August 1943, USS Biloxi was a Cleveland-class light cruiser that earned nine battle stars through two years of sustained Pacific operations. Named for the Mississippi Gulf Coast city, she joined the Pacific campaign at the point when American naval operations were transitioning from defensive survival to sustained offensive momentum.
Biloxi entered service just as the Navy was completing the reduction of Japanese positions in the Solomons and preparing for the Central Pacific drive. She joined the fast carrier task forces that would become the primary instrument of American Pacific power, the Essex-class carriers and their screens of cruisers and destroyers that could project airpower anywhere in the Pacific.
She participated in the Gilberts campaign, the Marshalls, and the opening strikes against the Marianas, the chain of engagements that brought American power steadily closer to the Japanese home islands. At the Battle of the Philippine Sea in June 1944, she was part of the massive fleet engagement that destroyed Japanese carrier aviation and opened the door to the Marianas landings.
Through the Philippines campaign and Leyte Gulf in late 1944, Biloxi contributed to the naval operations that finally broke Japan's ability to contest American naval dominance. In 1945 she participated in carrier strikes against the Japanese home islands, operations that brought destruction to Japanese naval facilities and industrial capacity as the final campaign to end the war intensified.
Nine battle stars for a ship that represented the professional, sustained naval power that won the Pacific War in its final phase. Biloxi was decommissioned on 28 August 1947. Tactically Acquired's USS Biloxi (CL-80) collection honors her crew and the Mississippi Gulf Coast's contribution to the Pacific campaign.
