USS Blueback (SS-581)

USS Blueback (SS-581) was a Barbel-class submarine that proved what aggressive, well-led boats could accomplish in the Pacific campaign. USS Blueback was the last conventionally powered submarine in active U.S. Navy service, decommissioned in 1990. She is preserved at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry in Portland. She also appeared in the film The Hunt for Red October. Today, USS Blueback is preserved as a museum ship where visitors can walk her decks and feel the confined spaces where her crew lived and fought.
