USS Cacapon (AO-52)

USS Cacapon (AO-52) was a T3 Cimarron-class fleet oiler that played an integral role in U.S. naval operations during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Launched on June 12, 1943, the ship's primary function was to transport and deliver fuel and petroleum products to other combat vessels.

World War II Pacific Theatre Operations: Cacapon was involved in various significant naval operations, including the Gilbert Islands operation, Marshall Islands operation, and supporting attacks on Japanese targets. She served as a station tanker in various locations and took part in the final bombardments on Japan in July 1945.

End-of-War Activity and Running Aground: Cacapon provided support to occupation forces in the Far East after the war and ran aground in the Persian Gulf in April 1946 but was repaired.

Supporting Antarctic Operations: Cacapon was part of Operation Highjump in Antarctica from December 1946 to April 1947, visiting Sydney, Australia, en route.

Korean War Operations: During the Korean War, Cacapon made four lengthy tours of duty, notably supporting the amphibious landing at Inchon and earning a Navy Unit Commendation for her high performance of duty.

Vietnam War and Other Operations: Cacapon participated in various other significant events, such as the evacuation of the Tachen Islands, the Vietnam evacuation "Operation Passage to Freedom," and Operation Hardtack I, involving nuclear bomb tests in the Marshall Islands.

Awards and Citations: For her service, Cacapon was awarded battle stars and citations throughout her service across World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.

The ship's name is derived from a Shawnee word meaning "medicine waters," and both Cacapon River and Cacapon Mountain are found in West Virginia.

Cacapon's activities throughout her career highlight her importance as a logistic support vessel, providing essential fuel and aid during pivotal military campaigns. Her involvement across three major conflicts illustrates the essential role that support ships play within the naval fleet.
