USS Capelin (SS-289)

USS Capelin (SS-289) is among the 52 American submarines lost during World War II. Her Balao-class hull carried a crew into the Molucca Sea where they fought and were lost. Lost around December 2, 1943, likely by mine or depth charge near Halmahera. All 78 crew perished during her second war patrol. Our USS Capelin collection exists to ensure her crew is not forgotten. Each item is a tribute to the submariners who climbed down the hatch knowing they might not climb back out. Built for submarine veterans, their families, and everyone who honors their sacrifice.
