USS Chipola (AO-63)

The USS Chipola (AO-63) was a Cimarron-class fleet oiler that played a crucial role in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Vietnam War. This vessel was specifically tasked with delivering petroleum products to combat ships, often in perilous situations.

Constructed by Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation in Sparrows Point, Maryland, and commissioned in November 1944, Chipola commenced her service during the critical final phase of World War II. She was launched on 21 October 1944, with Maritime Commission hull 729, and sponsored by Mrs. P. C. Chubb.

World War II Pacific Theatre Operations: Arriving at Eniwetok in January 1945, Chipola commenced fueling operations, contributing to the fast carrier task forces that were preparing for the invasion of Iwo Jima. She subsequently supported the landings on 19 February and the raids that led up to the Okinawa assault. Starting in July, Chipola provided oil for a series of air attacks and bombardments on the Japanese home islands.

End-of-War Activity: Following the cessation of hostilities, Chipola served as a station tanker in Tokyo Bay and other Far Eastern ports. She also made several voyages to the Persian Gulf to load oil and underwent necessary repairs on the U.S. West Coast.

Post-War Operations: Between 1946 and 1950, Chipola continued her vital duty, maintaining constant voyages to supply petroleum products. She carried out missions in the Mediterranean, operated on both east and west coasts, and engaged in frequent trips to the Persian Gulf. The oiler underwent several overhauls and performed duties in various regions, including the Caribbean.

Service with the MSTS: After being decommissioned in August 1955, Chipola was recommissioned in December 1956 for service with the Military Sea Transportation Service (MSTS). She was placed out of commission again in November 1957, only to be recommissioned in December 1960 to serve with the Pacific Fleet.

Awards and Legacy: In recognition of her service, the USS Chipola was awarded three battle stars during World War II and thirteen campaign stars during the Vietnam War. Her service provides an illustrative example of the relentless work required to keep the naval fleet operational, especially in the heat of battle.
