USS Cimarron (AO-22) was a key vessel in the Pacific War during World War II, supporting the first air raid on Tokyo in 1942, and fueling the fleet during major battles including Coral Sea, Midway, and Solomon Islands. Her support continued through various campaigns until the occupation of Japan.
In the Korean War, she ferried oil and fueled ships at strategic locations, performing four tours of duty in the Far East until 1953.
Her role extended into the Cold War, even serving as the flagship for a United Nations operation evacuating refugees from North Vietnam.
USS Cimarron (AO-22) continued service into the Vietnam War, contributing to various campaigns from 1965 to 1967.
She was decommissioned in 1968 and sold for scrap in 1969. Her bell was later installed at a high school in New Mexico.
