USS Dolphin (AGSS-555)
USS Dolphin (AGSS-555) was the Navy's one-of-a-kind deep-submergence research submarine. Built in the early 1960s, she was designed to dive far deeper than any operational submarine in the fleet, reaching depths that remain among the deepest ever achieved by a non-experimental military platform. Over a career spanning more than four decades, Dolphin served as a testbed for deep-ocean acoustics, weapons systems, and oceanographic research that advanced the Navy's understanding of the undersea environment in ways that directly supported the operational submarine force.
Dolphin's contributions were quiet by design but significant in impact. The data gathered during her deep dives informed sonar development, torpedo performance at depth, and the fundamental science of deep-ocean operations. Today she is preserved as a museum ship. Our USS Dolphin collection is built for the sailors who served aboard this unique boat and the military science community that benefited from her work. Every item reflects the specialized legacy of a submarine that went deeper than the rest.
