USS Enoree (AO-69)
The USS Enoree (AO-69) was a Chiwawa-class oiler constructed for the U.S. Navy during World War II and named after the Enoree River in South Carolina. Initially laid down as the tanker SS Sachem, it was renamed SS Enoree and designated AO-69 on 17 September 1942. Acquired and commissioned by the Navy on 23 January 1943, it underwent conversion before being deployed.
After departing Baltimore on 27 January 1943 for conversion, Enoree shuttled fuel between various locations, including Norfolk, Aruba, Port Arthur, and Casablanca. She then participated in numerous transatlantic runs, including trips to Belfast, Northern Ireland, and shuttling between various U.S. ports.
Following modifications, including the addition of a 160-ton crane, Enoree transitioned to the Pacific Fleet, arriving in Pearl Harbor on 19 May 1944. She then supported campaigns in the Marshall Islands, Mariana Islands, and Caroline Islands, as well as operations against Okinawa, providing both logistical work and fueling duties. Her heavy-lift capacity allowed for various tasks, such as unloading pontoons and lifting tank landing craft.
Enoree continued operations until Japan's acceptance of the Potsdam Declaration, with her final convoy departing Okinawa-bound on 14 August 1945. Her service during World War II was marked by extensive and varied operations, including fuel transport, convoy escort, and logistical support. Her ability to adapt to different roles and contribute to both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters illustrates the importance of support vessels in naval warfare.
