USS Fall River (CA-131)

USS Fall River (CA-131): Present at the Dawn of the Nuclear Age

Commissioned on 1 July 1945, USS Fall River was a Baltimore-class heavy cruiser commissioned just before Japan's surrender. Named for Massachusetts's mill city on the Taunton River, she served briefly before being assigned to one of the most consequential military experiments in American history.

In the summer of 1946, Fall River participated in Operation Crossroads at Bikini Atoll, the first peacetime nuclear weapons test program, designed to evaluate atomic bombs against warships and develop doctrine for the nuclear age. The Navy assembled a fleet of surplus target vessels, including Japanese and German war prizes, moored in various configurations around ground zero. Fall River was among them.

Test Able on 1 July 1946 was an airburst detonation. Test Baker on 25 July was an underwater detonation. The results were sobering: ships that survived the blasts themselves were contaminated with radioactivity in ways that made safe decontamination nearly impossible with 1946 technology. Operation Crossroads fundamentally changed how the Navy thought about nuclear warfare, leading directly to dispersed formation doctrine, nuclear-hardened ship designs, and eventually the nuclear-powered warships that could survive in a nuclear environment.

Fall River survived both tests physically, but radioactive contamination made further active service impractical. She was decommissioned on 31 October 1947. She was present at the moment nuclear age intersected with naval power, a witness to the beginning of an era that reshaped American strategy for the next 50 years.
