USS Flier (SS-250)

The Gato-class submarine USS Flier (SS-250) departed for the Western Pacific and never sent another transmission. Her loss is part of the steep price the submarine force paid in the Pacific. Lost August 13, 1944, after striking a mine in Balabac Strait. Only 8 of 86 crew survived, escaping the sinking hull and swimming to a Philippine island where guerrillas sheltered them.
