USS Galveston (CLG-3): First of the Missile Cruisers

USS Galveston has the distinction of being the first American cruiser converted to carry the Talos surface-to-air missile system, the weapon that represented the Navy's answer to the growing threat of Soviet bombers and missiles during the Cold War. Completed directly as CLG-3 rather than serving as a gun cruiser first, Galveston broke new ground in naval technology and then took that technology to war in Vietnam.

The conversion of Cleveland-class hulls to guided missile cruisers was one of the Navy's primary responses to Cold War naval requirements. The gun cruiser, dominant in World War II, was giving way to missile systems that could engage targets at ranges far beyond any gun's capability. Talos was the Navy's longest-range surface-to-air missile, capable of engaging aircraft at distances of over 100 miles, a revolutionary capability compared to the 5-inch anti-aircraft guns that had defined cruiser AA defense in World War II.

Galveston operated in Cold War deployments through the late 1950s and early 1960s, serving as a technological testbed and demonstrating the Navy's commitment to the new missile technology. When the Vietnam War expanded American naval operations, she participated in Gulf of Tonkin operations and the sustained naval campaign along the Vietnamese coast, earning two battle stars for her Vietnam service.

Her significance in naval history lies as much in what she represented, the transition from gun-armed warships to missile-armed ones, as in her combat record. She was the first of a new type, and the precedent she set shaped American naval architecture for decades.
