The Gato-class submarine USS Herring (SS-233) departed for the North Pacific and never sent another transmission. Her loss is part of the steep price the submarine force paid in the Pacific. Lost June 1, 1944, sunk by shore battery fire while attacking at close range in the Kurile Islands. All 83 crew perished. She had just sunk two Japanese ships in the harbor.
Our Herring gear honors a boat and crew who paid the highest price. Designed for submarine veterans and military families, every item in this collection carries the weight of real history.
