"Semper Fortis"
USS Jarvis (DD-393)
USS Jarvis (DD-393) was a Bagley-class destroyer of the United States Navy. The Bagley class was part of the 1,500-ton destroyer series built in the late 1930s, carrying an exceptionally heavy torpedo armament of sixteen tubes in four quadruple mounts. All eight ships of the class were stationed at Pearl Harbor as Destroyer Squadron 4 on 7 December 1941. Three were lost in combat during the Guadalcanal campaign. Two survivors were used as targets during the Operation Crossroads atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll in 1946.
Named for Lieutenant Commander David H. Jarvis, a Revenue Cutter Service officer famous for leading the Overland Relief Expedition in 1897 to rescue whalers trapped in Arctic ice near Point Barrow, Alaska, USS Jarvis was built by Puget Sound Navy Yard, Bremerton, Washington and commissioned in October 1937. One of the most tragic losses of the Guadalcanal campaign. On 8 August 1942, Jarvis was hit by a Japanese torpedo during an air attack off Tulagi. Badly damaged but still underway, she attempted to withdraw to Australia for repairs. The next day, south of Savo Island, Japanese bombers found Jarvis alone and crippled. She was sunk with all 247 hands. No distress signal was received. The ship simply disappeared, and her fate was not confirmed for weeks. Jarvis remains one of the U.S. Navy's most complete wartime losses.
USS Jarvis earned 2 battle stars for service in: Pearl Harbor, Guadalcanal. Sunk with all hands by Japanese aircraft south of Savo Island, 9 August 1942. All 247 crew killed.
