USS Kennebec (AO-36)
USS Kennebec (AO-36), originally the SS Corsicana, was a Kennebec class T2 tanker built by Bethlehem Sparrows Point Shipyard and delivered to Socony-Vacuum Oil Company in 1941. Purchased by the U.S. Navy in 1942 and renamed Kennebec, the ship had an eventful service history, being decommissioned four times and twice stricken from the Naval Vessel Register.
USS Kennebec was first decommissioned in September 1950, recommissioned in January 1951, decommissioned again in September 1954 and December 1956, then recommissioned in December 1961. It served the Pacific Fleet during the Vietnam War until 1970.
The ship was finally decommissioned on 29 June 1970 and transferred to the Maritime Administration (MARAD) for laying up in the National Defense Reserve Fleet. It was stricken from the Naval Register again in July 1976, sold to Levin Metals Corporation in April 1982 for $180,077, and subsequently scrapped.
