USS Little Rock (CL-92)

USS Little Rock (CL-92): From WWII to Vietnam to the Museum Dock

Commissioned on 17 June 1945, USS Little Rock arrived too late for World War II combat but had one of the longest and most varied service careers in the American cruiser fleet, fighting in Vietnam, serving as a Sixth Fleet flagship in the Mediterranean, and surviving to this day as a museum ship at the Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park in Buffalo, New York, where you can walk her decks and feel the weight of her history.

Little Rock was converted to a guided missile cruiser (CLG-4) in 1960, receiving the Talos surface-to-air missile system that represented the cutting edge of Cold War naval technology. In this configuration she served as a Sixth Fleet flagship in the Mediterranean during one of the tensest periods of the Cold War, projecting American naval power in the waters that bordered NATO's southern flank and the Soviet Union's Mediterranean access routes.

When the Vietnam War expanded American naval commitments in the Western Pacific, Little Rock participated in Gulf of Tonkin operations and the sustained naval campaign supporting American and South Vietnamese forces. Her service earned battle stars in a conflict that tested American naval capability in new and unexpected ways.

She was decommissioned as CG-4 on 22 November 1976, ending a service life that spanned two wars and three decades of Cold War naval operations. Rather than being scrapped, she was preserved as a museum, offering visitors the chance to see firsthand what a WWII-era gun cruiser converted to Cold War missile technology actually looked like from the inside.

If you've walked her decks at Buffalo, you know what American naval heritage looks and feels like. Tactically Acquired's USS Little Rock (CL-92) collection honors that heritage and every man who served aboard her from commissioning through decommissioning.
