USS Miami (CL-89)

USS Miami (CL-89): Florida's Cruiser in the Pacific

Commissioned on 28 December 1943, USS Miami was a Cleveland-class light cruiser that earned six battle stars across the final two years of the Pacific War. Named for Florida's growing resort city, she carried her name across the Pacific through the carrier task force operations that defined American naval strategy in the war's final phase.

Miami entered the Pacific campaign in mid-1944 and immediately joined the fast carrier task force operations in the Central Pacific. She participated in the Marianas campaign, including operations around Saipan, Tinian, and Guam, the chain of island assaults that brought B-29 Superfortresses within range of the Japanese home islands. Naval gunfire support from ships like Miami helped reduce Japanese beach defenses before Marines and Army troops went ashore.

At the Battle of the Philippine Sea in June 1944, Miami was part of the massive American carrier force that confronted the last serious Japanese attempt to contest American naval dominance. The battle destroyed three Japanese carriers and hundreds of aircraft, effectively ending Japan's carrier aviation capability for the remainder of the war.

Through the Leyte Gulf campaign and the Philippines operations in late 1944 and 1945, Miami provided carrier screening and anti-aircraft defense as kamikaze attacks intensified. Her sustained service through the war's final phase demonstrated the kind of professional naval effectiveness that won the Pacific campaign through sustained application of superior firepower and logistics.

Six battle stars. Miami was decommissioned on 28 February 1947. Tactically Acquired's USS Miami (CL-89) collection honors Florida's contribution to the Pacific War and the crew of a ship that fought through the campaign's most intense final phase.
