USS New Hampshire (SSN-778) is a Virginia-class nuclear attack submarine, part of the class designed to be the backbone of the American submarine force for the 21st century. The Virginia-class was engineered from the ground up for the post-Cold War operational environment, with capabilities spanning anti-submarine warfare, land attack with Tomahawk cruise missiles, intelligence gathering, special operations support, and mine warfare.
