USS Penguin (ASR-12) — Chanticleer-Class Submarine Rescue Vessel

USS Penguin (ASR-12) was a Chanticleer-class submarine rescue vessel commissioned in 1946. She served in the Pacific Fleet during the Cold War. When USS Thresher was lost in 1963 with all 129 hands, the limitations of existing rescue systems drove the creation of the DSRV program that Penguin's successors would carry.
