USS Permit (SSN-594)

USS Permit (SSN-594) earned a place in submarine history that endures. Permit was the lead ship of her class, originally designated the Thresher-class but renamed after Thresher's loss. The Permit-class introduced the BQQ-2 sonar suite, a massive bow-mounted spherical array that moved torpedo tubes to amidships and gave these boats the most advanced acoustic detection capability of any submarine in the world.
