USS Philadelphia (CL-41): The City of Brotherly Love Goes to War

Commissioned on 23 September 1937, USS Philadelphia was the second Brooklyn-class light cruiser and a veteran of the Mediterranean campaign from its opening in 1942 to the Italian operations of 1944. Named for Pennsylvania's historic city, she fought across the southern European theater, her 6-inch guns supporting Allied ground forces on some of the most contested beachheads of the European war.

Philadelphia was on the East Coast when Pearl Harbor pulled America into World War II. She quickly transitioned to wartime operations, working Atlantic convoy escort before being committed to the major Allied amphibious operations that opened the European theater's land campaigns. Her sustained service in the Mediterranean earned five battle stars across multiple major operations.

At Operation Torch in November 1942, Philadelphia was part of the naval force covering the Central Task Force landings at Oran in Algeria. The landings at Oran faced stiffer resistance than those at Morocco, and naval gunfire, including from Philadelphia's batteries, was critical in suppressing French coastal defenses and supporting the assault troops ashore.

She continued into 1943, participating in the Sicily landings in July, Operation Husky, the first Allied assault on Axis-held European territory. Naval gunfire support from ships like Philadelphia was essential in keeping the landing forces alive through the critical first hours on the beach. She supported Operation Avalanche, the September 1943 landings at Salerno on mainland Italy, one of the most fiercely contested amphibious operations of the war, where German counterattacks came within a mile of pushing the Allies back into the sea.

In 1944, Philadelphia participated in Operation Dragoon, the August invasion of southern France, rounding out a Mediterranean career that touched nearly every major Allied amphibious operation in the theater. Five battle stars and years of sustained operations supporting the Allied drive through North Africa and into Europe.
