USS Providence (CL-82)

USS Providence (CL-82): Rhode Island's Two-War Cruiser

Commissioned on 15 May 1945, USS Providence arrived in the Pacific just as the war was in its final stages. She participated in limited operations before Japan's surrender in August 1945 and was decommissioned in the postwar drawdown. But her story didn't end there, two decades later, she was converted to a guided missile cruiser and sent to Vietnam, making her one of the rare American warships with combat service in two wars.

Providence was recommissioned as CLG-6 in 1959, armed with Talos long-range surface-to-air missiles and rearranged fire control systems that represented the transition from gun cruiser to missile cruiser. As CLG-6, she became one of the primary anti-aircraft defense platforms of the Atlantic Fleet and Sixth Fleet, serving in Mediterranean deployments during Cold War tensions.

Her Vietnam service brought her back to wartime conditions. She participated in naval operations in the Gulf of Tonkin and along the Vietnamese coast, contributing to the naval gunfire support and carrier protection missions that characterized American naval involvement in Southeast Asia. Three Vietnam battle stars for a ship that had already served in the Pacific during World War II.

Providence served as a floating symbol of the continuity of American naval power, a World War II gun cruiser converted to Cold War missile technology and put back to work in a new war in a new era. She was decommissioned as CG-6 in 1973, finally retired after nearly three decades of service across two very different conflicts.

Tactically Acquired's USS Providence (CL-82) collection honors a ship that served Rhode Island's name through two wars and two technological eras of American naval history. The name Providence carried through to the end.
