USS Richard B. Russell (SSN-687)

USS Richard B. Russell (SSN-687) was a Sturgeon-class nuclear attack submarine, built for the demanding mission of finding and tracking Soviet ballistic missile submarines in the deep ocean. The Sturgeon design improved on the Permit-class with better quieting, enhanced sonar, and the ability to conduct sustained under-ice operations in the Arctic, where Soviet SSBNs increasingly operated.
