USS San Juan (CL-54)

USS San Juan (CL-54): Thirteen Stars in the Pacific Sky

Commissioned on 28 February 1942, USS San Juan was an Atlanta-class anti-aircraft cruiser that earned thirteen battle stars across the Pacific War, from the desperate early battles of Guadalcanal through the final operations against the Japanese home islands. Named for Puerto Rico's capital, she carried the honor of her city through some of the hardest fighting of the Pacific campaign and emerged with one of the finest combat records of any American light cruiser.

San Juan entered the Pacific campaign in mid-1942 and was immediately committed to the Guadalcanal theater, joining the rotation of cruisers and destroyers that fought almost continuously in the waters around the contested island. Her anti-aircraft batteries were critical in the carrier task forces, and her sustained accuracy in shooting down Japanese aircraft helped preserve the carriers that were the foundation of American naval strategy.

She was at Santa Cruz in October 1942, part of the carrier force that stopped a Japanese offensive but lost USS Hornet. She was at the chaotic Naval Battle of Guadalcanal in November, surviving the night when Atlanta was scuttled and Juneau was blown apart. Through 1943, she participated in the Solomons campaign, the Aleutians, and the opening Central Pacific operations.

San Juan participated in the Philippine Sea in June 1944, the "Marianas Turkey Shoot", where American carrier aviation shattered Japanese naval air power so completely that it never recovered. She was at Leyte Gulf in October 1944, part of the largest naval battle in history, and continued through the final operations of 1945 as American forces closed on the Japanese home islands.

Thirteen battle stars. A career that represented the sustained commitment of American naval forces to fight and win the Pacific War from its desperate opening to its victorious close. San Juan was decommissioned on 6 November 1946. Tactically Acquired's USS San Juan (CL-54) collection honors every sailor who served aboard her through the full arc of the Pacific War.
