USS Scorpion (SSN-589)
"Semper Fortis"
USS Scorpion (SSN-589) was a Skipjack-class nuclear attack submarine, part of the first class to combine the Albacore teardrop hull with nuclear propulsion. The Skipjack design was the fastest submarine class in the Navy at the time and represented a critical leap in undersea warfare capability. Lost May 22, 1968 southwest of the Azores with all 99 crew. The cause remains debated — the Navy's court of inquiry cited a torpedo malfunction, though alternative theories have been proposed. Her wreck was located by the bathyscaphe Trieste at a depth of over 10,000 feet. Scorpion was the last American submarine lost at sea.
We carry USS Scorpion merchandise because her crew's sacrifice must not fade from memory. Every item in this collection exists to honor the men who were lost and to remind the submarine community of the price that has been paid.
