USS Seawolf (SSN-21) represents a milestone in the evolution of American undersea warfare. Seawolf was designed as the ultimate Cold War attack submarine — faster, quieter, deeper-diving, and more heavily armed than any submarine before her. Built to counter the Soviet Union's most advanced submarines in deep-ocean blue-water combat, she remains among the most capable attack submarines ever constructed. Only three boats of this class were built as the Cold War ended and costs escalated.
