USS Springfield (SSN-761) deployed as a Los Angeles-class nuclear attack submarine, the workhorse of the American submarine force from the 1970s through the 2020s. LA-class boats were built to be fast enough to escort carriers, quiet enough to hunt Soviet submarines, and versatile enough to adapt as the strategic environment shifted from Cold War to global operations.
