USS Stack (DD-406)
USS Stack (DD-406) was a Sims-class destroyer of the United States Navy. The Sims class was the last pre-war destroyer class completed before the Fletcher class transformed the U.S. Navy's destroyer force. Displacing 1,764 tons, the Sims class carried five 5-inch guns and eight torpedo tubes. Twelve were built, and they served in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters.
Named for Commander Edward Stack, who commanded the brig USS Viper during the War of 1812 and was captured by the Royal Navy when the ship ran aground in January 1813, USS Stack was built by Philadelphia Navy Yard, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and commissioned in November 1939. Served in the Atlantic and Mediterranean, participating in convoy escort operations and supporting multiple amphibious landings in the European theater. Escorted convoys across the North Atlantic during the height of the U-boat threat and supported the Allied landings in North Africa, Sicily, Salerno, and Normandy.
USS Stack earned 5 battle stars for service in: Atlantic convoy escort, Operation Torch, Sicily, Salerno, Anzio, Normandy. Decommissioned November 1945. Sold for scrap March 1947.
