USS Tilefish (SS-307)

USS Tilefish (SS-307) was a Balao-class submarine, an improved design that gave American submariners a stronger pressure hull and greater depth capability than the preceding Gato-class. Balao-class boats could dive deeper under depth charge attack, a survivability advantage that proved critical in the increasingly intense anti-submarine warfare environment of the later Pacific war.
