USS Tortuga (LSD-26) was a Casa Grande-class dock landing ship Tortuga(LSD-26) was laid down on 16 October 1944 by the Boston Navy Yard launched on 21 January 1945; sponsored by Mrs. George D. Payne and commissioned on 8 June 1945 Lt. COMDr. Raymond G. Brown USNR in command.Commissioned during the final phase of World War IITortugaconducted shakedown in the Virginia capes area and was at Colon Canal Zone en route to the Pacific combat area on 15 August 1945 when she received news of Japan's surrender.
