U.S. Navy Destroyers
Allen M. Sumner-Class Destroyers
The next evolution of American destroyer design. Built on the Fletcher hull with twin 5-inch/38 gun mounts instead of singles, the Sumner class packed six guns into three turrets - more firepower with better fire control. 58 ships were completed from 1943 to 1945, arriving just in time for the brutal final campaigns at Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Three were lost to enemy action. The design proved so successful it led directly to the Gearing class, which extended the hull for more fuel capacity.
