Lead ship . near-sunk in a collision with USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67) in the Mediterranean, November 22, 1975. Fire engulfed her for hours; eight men died. Rebuilt from the keel as a fleet flagship at a cost exceeding the original ship. Came back tougher.
